Report: Reading 0, Spurs 2

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

First half goals from Mido and Jermain Defoe were enough to see off the challenge of Reading at the Madejski Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Mido opened the scoring after just five minutes with a neat finish before the little hitman doubled the advantage in first half stoppage time. Reading did have a good share of the game but could not work a breakthrough and the boys remain unbeaten after six games of our pre-season programme.

After a delay of 15 minutes the game got underway with a lively tempo which, to be honest, was being set by the home side with one-time Spurs target Bobby Convey giving Stephen Kelly a sharpening up session down the Reading left. From one such sortie, Convey provided a useful chance for Leroy Lita, but his effort was stabbed wide.

Not that our own team was particularly slow out of the blocks and, from the first real advance up the pitch, the lead was secured just seconds before the five minute mark. From a deft touch by Wayne Routledge - following good work from Anthony Gardner and Jermain Defoe - Mido galloped clear to the right of the Reading area and cleverly jabbed the ball past Marcus Hahnemann into the bottom corner of the net for his fourth goal of pre-season.

The tide of the game had quickly turned and pace and confidence was seemingly injected into the Spurs ranks.

Despite their wobble, Reading regrouped and began to re-establish a foothold in the game. Good work from Glen Little - who did us some much damage while playing for Burnley nearly three years ago - led to Kevin Doyle firing in a cross-shot that Teemu Tainio did well to divert away.

The pace of the game proceeded to venture into a spot of pre-season lethargy on what was turning into a warm afternoon in Berkshire. The highly rated Steve Sidwell did manage to sting the fingers of Radek Cerny on 35 minutes before Mido's powerful drive was deflected wide at the other end.

Six minutes before the break, from a Convey corner, Reading had their best chance of levelling when the ball fell at the feet of Sidwell who volleyed first time against Cerny's right-hand upright. In the same passage of play, Cerny must have collided with the aforementioned post and was forced from the field of play - replaced by Robert Burch.

The disruption did not prove too damaging in the minutes before half-time and the advantage was doubled just after the fourth official signalled one minute of additional play. The ball came out from the Reading rearguard and fell for Defoe about 20 yards out - his strike hit Ibrahima Sonko and completely wrong-footed Hahnemann and drifted into the net.

Burch had to show good reactions in the opening minutes of the second period when a header in front of goal from Doyle came close to halving the deficit. Speculative efforts from Defoe, Mendes and Reto Ziegler followed, but the Spurs fans were busy at the time trying - and succeeding - in catching the attention of the watching Edgar Davids in the Directors' Box.

Sidwell had a goal disallowed on 65 minutes, latching onto a precision cross from Convey. Defoe and Mido then so nearly combined to make it three but the England striker couldn't quite latch onto the return pass in front of goal before Hahnemann gratefully grasped hold of the ball.

The boys were stringing passes together for fun as the match approached the final 15 minutes, Mendes and Tainio pulling the strings in a game of keep-ball before Ledley King picked out a superlative pass to find Defoe in the clear, but Hahnemann managed to block. Mido presented Defoe with a further chance in a similar position a minute later, with this one also going begging.

Convey rattled the post with a superbly executed free-kick with seven minutes left on the clock and then Lita shot just wide with an overhead kick from a Doyle cross.

Another win in what is becoming a promising pre-season - next stop Aldershot on Sunday.
