Report: Coventry 0-3 Spurs

U17 Academy South

Robbie Keane and Fredi Kanoute were too hot to handle as we handed caretaker boss David Pleat the perfect start in the Carling Cup at Coventry City on Wednesday night.

The pair combined twice in the space of 10 minutes in the first half to put us 2-0 up and just about put this second round tie out of reach.

Rohan Ricketts completed a memorable night by cracking home his first goal for the club from 20 yards with five minutes left.

The home team had no answer to the movement of the front two and, with the pacy Blondel an outlet down the left, the quick break was a constant threat.

City, easy on the eye, rarely got in behind the defensive line led by Steve Carr, skipper in Jamie Redknapp's absence.

It took 13 minutes for the crucial opening goal to arrive. It was all over in the blink of an eye as Keane released Kanoute with the perfect pass and the Frenchman never looked likely to miss, sliding the ball past Shearer.

Coventry's only sight of goal came four minutes later after a spot of confusion as Gardner left the ball for Keller only for it to sit up on the surface and allow Adebola to get there first, his lob across goal rather than on target cleared by the covering Richards.

A second goal always looked likely though and Poyet might have done better after 20 minutes when Keane touched off Kanoute's pass only for the midfielder to smash the ball over from 16 yards.

Two minutes later and it was 2-0. Keane's control from Kanoute pass left Konjic for dead and opened the path to goal. He still had lot to do but twisted and turned away from two defenders, nutmegging Staunton on the way before tucking the ball into the corner.

Two more break before the end of the half perhaps should have increased the lead further as Kanoute was inches away from Blondel's cross before Shearer's fantastic double save from Poyet with the second effort hitting the post.

Gary McAllister threw on Jorgensen and ex-Gunner Barrett at half-time and Coventrycame out with more zip, Jorgensen testing Keller from 30 yards.

Ricketts came on for the industrious Blondel just after the hour in a quiet period of the game as Coventry probed without success and we looked for the counter.

Our first chance of the period arrived after 72 minutes when Anderton found Ricketts wide left of the area but Shearer was out quickly to block. Poyet then headed wide from Ricketts cross.

The lively Ricketts then dinked a lob just over with Shearer stranded before the home keeper did well to block from Kanoute one-one-one after combining with substitute Postiga, on for Keane.

A third goal looked on it's away and when it arrived, was the pick of the trio on the night as Ricketts cut in from the left touchline before unleashing a fierce drive from 20 yards that Shearer could only help into the top corner. The perfect end to a good night's work.
