Rain and shine

01 December 2015|Tottenham Hotspur

Anton Walkes was delighted to hit the winner for our Under-21s at Middlesbrough – because he felt at fault for Boro’s early goal.

The home side took the lead after a storming run from Harrison Chapman set up Joao Morelli in a rain-soaked Barclays Under-21 Premier League clash at Rockliffe Park.

It was a goal very much against the run of play but the team turned it around in the second half as Shaq Coulthirst levelled on 58 minutes before Walkes’ third goal in four matches secured victory 10 minutes from time, a clinical finish from Andros Townsend’s cross.

“It was important for me to get the winning goal because I played a part in their goal by not doing my job properly,” stated the young midfielder.

“I should have defended the runner better or won the ball back in their half but he got away from me and ended up dribbling through to our box and they scored from that.

“We were pushing at the end, creating chances and they were hanging on. In the end, anyone could have scored that goal but I’m glad I did, it was a great feeling.

“The win shows we have real resilience. We were behind early but we went after them in the second half, got the momentum and turned it around.”

Walkes has been one of the shining lights in a season that gets better and better for the Under-21s – Monday’s win stretched their unbeaten run to five, winning four.

Encouraged to get box to box, Walkes has delivered. “I’m looking to play a big part this season, score goals, get some assists and do the job defensively as well,” he added. “I’m just delighted to be able to show what I’m capable of.”
