Rafa confident

Rafa van der Vaart takes heart from last season’s performance at Old Trafford as we prepare to face United again tonight.

Rafa van der Vaart takes heart from last season’s performance at Old Trafford as we prepare to face United again tonight.

The Dutch forward was in irresistible form in our season-opener at Hearts on Thursday night, where he opened his goalscoring account with the first goal in our 5-0 win.

Now it’s the Premier League and first-game assignments don’t come much tougher than a visit to the champions.

United got the better of us 2-0 at Old Trafford last October but that didn’t tell the whole story.

Rafa struck the post from 25 yards with the scoreline goalless and we gave as good as we got against a team that would eventually win 18 of its 19 home matches on the way to the title. United’s goals came from a Nemanja Vidic header from a set-piece and Nani’s late, controversial second five minutes from time.

“We played fantastic there last season, I hit the post and we were just a little unlucky,” said Rafa. “I think we have a good chance. Why not?

“It’s another big game, our first league game of the season, we’re ready and looking forward to it.

“Of course it’s a tough game but we have a lot of confidence after the win at Hearts that we can get a positive result.”
