'Rabona' worthy of award, says Harry

29 May 2015|Tottenham Hotspur

Harry Kane may have notched up 31 goals over the course of the campaign, but even he admits Erik Lamela’s famous ‘rabona’ was a worthy winner of the Europa League’s Goal of the Season!

The Argentina international’s fabulous strike in our 5-1 home win over Asteras Tripolis back in October was this week named the UEFA competition’s best of 2014-15.

Latching onto a loose ball 20 yards from goal, Erik wrapped his left foot around his right and sent a curling effort into the top corner of the net to make it 2-0 on the night – the attacking midfielder later scoring a second goal as we went on to claim a comfortable victory in the group stage match at White Hart Lane.

Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and current Iceland boss Lars Lagerbäck were on the selection panel who named the ‘rabona’ as the Europa League’s best of the campaign – the strike having already won our official Supporters’ Clubs’ Goal of the Season award earlier this month.

Striker Harry, who also hit the headlines against Asteras Tripolis by rattling in his first senior hat-trick and then going in goal after the late sending-off of Hugo Lloris, agreed with the sentiment and admitted it was a good night all round against the Greek side.

“It was a special goal,” he said. “I think everyone knows it was a great bit of skill with a great technique and to see the ball fly in – you don’t see that happen very often!

“I was buzzing for Erik to be fair and obviously I was happy for myself that night as well.

“I don’t think a lot of the lads properly saw Erik’s effort on the pitch, but then when everyone saw it again afterwards you knew straight away how special it was.

“It was a great goal and a deserved goal of the year for sure!”
