Qarabag v Spurs - Mauricio's preview

26 November 2015|Tottenham Hotspur

Qarabag’s home form in the Europa League comes as no surprise to Mauricio Pochettino.

The Azerbaijan champions have lost only once domestically all season and remain unbeaten at home - including two rounds of Champions League qualifying and their home matches against Anderlecht (1-0) and Monaco (1-1) in Europa League Group J.

Already nine points clear in Azerbaijan, Qarabag also impressed in our meeting at White Hart Lane in September where they took an early lead before Heung-Min Son (2) and Erik Lamela turned it around.

“Qarabag have played well and maybe that’s a big surprise for some people, but not for us,” said Mauricio.

“They showed that at White Hart Lane and they’ve done the same against Anderlecht and Monaco (at home). They play very well in Baku and this will be a difficult game.

“It’s an important game for us because we want to get into the next round of the Europa League.

“It’s tough with the long trip to Baku, difficult conditions for us, but we want to go through so we need to compete and try to take the three points.”

Qarabag played an open, enterprising game at the Lane and Mauricio expects the same at the Tofiq Bahramov Stadium this evening (6pm UK, 10pm local).

“Yes, we expect a similar game,” he added. “They play in the same way at home as they do away and have some very good players.

"They are a very aggressive and dynamic team with and without the ball and we need to be ready to compete.”

Victory this evening will see us progress to the knockout phase of the competition with a final group match against Monaco to follow at the Lane on Thursday, December 10.
