Qarabag 0-1 Spurs - Mauricio's verdict
26 November 2015|Tottenham Hotspur
Mauricio Pochettino praised a ‘mature’ performance from team against Qarabag before paying tribute to the fans who travelled all the way to Azerbaijan to watch us qualify for the knockout stage of the Europa League on Thursday evening.
Harry Kane struck in his sixth successive game to secure a 1-0 victory as we played a patient game against the Azerbaijani champions.
Qarabag had only conceded one goal at home in Europe this season before Thursday’s Group J encounter and they showed how with a solid shape throughout, often with eight men behind the ball ready to spring on the counter.
As it turned out, Qarabag’s clear chances were kept to a minimum while we knocked and knocked at the other end and finally broke through when Harry converted Heung-Min Son’s flick-on from Christian Eriksen’s corner 12 minutes from time.
The win took us three points clear of Anderlecht, who beat Monaco, and into the last 32.
“It was a tough game, Qarabag’s first loss at home this season and an important win for us – three points and we’re into the next round,” said Mauricio.
“This was a good win for our mentality, we showed maturity and it was a strong performance.”
Mauricio said patience was key. “It’s one of the big things in football, to keep working hard and to be patient when a team like Qarabag sits in deep,” he explained.
“It’s never easy but we’re happy because we showed patience, maturity and we fully deserved the win.
“I’d also like to say thanks to our supporters. They deserve a lot of praise because it’s a long, long way to come from London to Azerbaijan and that support is so valuable for us.”
