Programme: Teddy Sheringham

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

After the excitement of having such a great result over Chelsea in the semi-final and everyone being so thrilled about playing in the Worthington Cup Final in a beautiful stadium in Cardiff, how flat did we all feel on Monday morning?

Personally, I must admit I didn’t have a good game and I was very disappointed with my own performance on Sunday. It was a massive game for the club and I was really upset that I was not able to produce anything like my best in a match in which we needed everyone to be on top form.

We’re all just stunned, not so much that we lost but because of the way we played and that we didn’t perform as well as we have done in so many games this season. I don’t think we played well as a team. We started very well and for the first five minutes we passed the ball nicely and thought it might be our day, but it takes more than that to win a football match.

We are all very disappointed. We went into the game as favourites and had enough chances to win the match as well but having said that so did Blackburn, it was pretty much even and end-to-end and whoever took their chances was going to win.

They got their noses in front which is invaluable in a final and we used a lot of energy getting back into the match. But once we did that we let in another goal which put us on the backfoot and left us chasing the game again.

We never really got in control of the match the way we like to. But even though we weren’t on our game and didn’t play well as a team, we still had enough chances to claw at least a draw out of it and take the match to extra time, but it wasn’t to be.

To win a game you hopefully have to have eight players on top form, we had nothing like that so it was an uphill battle. We all went in to the match in the right frame of mind but sometimes it doesn’t click. Despite that though, we still tried to grind out a result and full credit to the lads for that. We didn’t give up in any way, we were still pushing right up to the last minute. We had a penalty appeal turned down and a couple of chances all in the last few minutes, but it just wasn’t to be on the day.

The penalty decision was the wrong one in my opinion. I thought it was a definite penalty, I know the defender is coming but I’ve dinked it over the guy’s foot and I know he’s coming to tackle me. I’m expecting it but he still caught my trailing leg and it should have been a penalty in my book. I still can’t believe he didn’t give it.

So we’ve got to pick ourselves up and get on with the rest of the season. We’re in a decent position in the league and in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, so let’s put Sunday behind us and look forward to turning in something that we can be proud of between now and the end of the season.

We must look to get back on track both in our own heads and on the pitch. We know that it’s not the end of our season, there’s still a long way to go and if we can get the right result today, we will be back in the groove.

Obviously the players are the ones who can turn things around on the pitch, but we need to get the fans behind us again. We are all pulling in the right direction and I’m sure we will achieve our aim of success together.
