Programme: Glenn Hoddle

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

The FA Cup has a special affinity with White Hart Lane. And although it may seem greedy in light of our approaching Worthington Cup Final, we are equally ambitious to make it all the way in this competition.

I was lucky enough to play in three FA Cup Finals — plus two Wembley replays — and there are few occasions to better it. To me it remains the premier cup tournament in the world.

But our famous cup tradition hardly matters from kick-off onwards this evening because it's now all about the present. We have a job to do against Bolton and Sam Allardyce's side will make us work hard for anything that we achieve tonight.

At one goal up against Newcastle, there was only one team going to score again as we approached half-time. We were comfortable up until then and passing the ball well but our second half performance fell way below the standards I will accept.

Unfortunately, I am writing these notes ahead of Saturday's game at Derby, but never doubt that the league does matter to us. The most crucial quality in the game is consistency and I want us performing week in week out to the same level in every match.

Having said that, our squad is becoming stretched and it is a blow that some of our long term injuries are not ready to come back as yet. Any more, touch wood, and it will become difficult to maintain our balance and, in essence, our desired approach to games.

But it was our attitude in the second-half against Newcastle that concerned me. It was like chalk and cheese from our Chelsea performance because United took risks when they were trailing and we didn't possess the desire to punish them.
We didn't work hard enough either and that's the bottom line. As I've said before, 100 per cent effort on our attacking and defensive game is vital. If you're even slightly off the mark then you get punished in this league.

Tonight has to be different and I know that it will. I can remember some great cup nights at this old stadium and I'm again looking for you to play your part in making this another special atmosphere.

We can assume nothing from the fact that we have already defeated Wanderers twice here this season because the page is blank again.

So in welcoming Sam Allardyce and all from Bolton, we do so in the knowledge that this is a different situation from our Worthington Cup meeting when we won comfortably. Bolton will be scrapping for every ball here tonight and have the quality to cause us problems if we are not on our mettle.

Our league meeting offers a better clue to how tight it could be tonight with another game of ebb and flow expected.

But you can make the difference. Get behind the lads, raise the roof and help lift us into the fifth round.
