Programme: George Graham
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
This afternoon presents us with an immediate opportunity to quickly put the midweek Worthington Cup disappointment behind us and start improving our league position.
That Birmingham City result is certainly one to forget. We let ourselves down badly, and our first-half defending was totally unacceptable. We made changes at the interval and looked more solid as a result but by then it was too late.
In the end we surrendered our unbeaten home record far too easily and that hurts. Not just personally because I can assure you that it also hurt the players. Now we must begin making improvements immediately, starting with this afternoon's encounter with Sunderland.
We also conceded three goals at Chelsea in our last Premiership game but at least we started brightly there against a very good side.
However, as with Birmingham the other night, we just could not produce that final vital touch in front of goal and we then suffered the bad luck to concede a harsh penalty that gave Chelsea the initiative.
True, we're all disappointed but we also all know that you cannot travel to such places without experienced players like Sol Campbell, Sergei Rebrov, Oyvind Leonhardsen, Ben Thatcher, Steffen Iversen, Mauricio Taricco and Chris Armstrong but that is what we are having to do. And losing Steffen Freund so early against Birmingham was another cruel blow.
The positive element is that emerging players like Stephen Clemence and Luke Young are continuing to learn their trade but it is a difficult time for younger more inexperienced lads to come in.
However, you have to be positive and look for pluses in every situation and our greatest asset at the moment is our wonderful team spirit. We have a side that fights for each other and it's just a pity that a certain small section of our support cannot see that.
In adversity, the players need you more than ever and it's a shame that a small group with loud voices are blind to that.
Now we welcome Sunderland to White Hart Lane in anticipation of another challenging game. Hopefully, we can get some of our injured players back as we seek to maintain our excellent home form in the league.
