Programme: George Graham
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
Hopefully we will have a bit more fortune in front of goal tonight following the stalemate in our last game here against Middlesbrough.
We were not surprised by Boro's approach because we knew that their need of points would put an onus on defence. In the end, there was just one side looking to win the game and the fact that our goalkeeper Neil Sullivan did not have one direct shot to deal with illustrates Boro's reluctance to emerge from their defensive shell.
For our own part, we just needed one break and I am sure that we could have gone on to have won well. I said at the time that I was disappointed that Chris Armstrong had two good efforts disallowed and, having seen the replays a couple of times, I remain adamant that he was not offside for either.
These are the moments - and decisions - that totally change games.
But it was one of those days. I felt for you all because it was a cold, miserable afternoon and there was little in a scrappy game to get excited about. In many ways I was pleased with our players because they dominated throughout and never stopped plugging away but we just needed an end product to our supremacy.
Our only consolation is that we take our unbeaten home run into 2001 and that's certainly good going. And a good win this evening would be the perfect start to the New Year.
However, we know that we will have to be at our best against the Magpies to achieve that. Newcastle will certainly attack us tonight and so we can expect a very different game against a high-quality side.
In welcoming Bobby Robson and his team, plus the supporters who have made the long and difficult journey south, we do so in certain expectation of a severe test by a side who have certainly done us no favours in recent years. It's been a busy holiday schedule for us all, but if you've spent the Christmas and New Year in a relaxed mode, then this could be just the game to blow away the cobwebs!
We let ourselves down up at St James' Park early in the season when we failed to do ourselves justice and, quite simply, never got started. Now we have the perfect opportunity to really show what we can do as we bid to maintain our excellent form here and enter 2001 in a positive manner.
Unfortunately, our advanced programme printing deadlines prevent me from making any reference to our latest games at Southampton and Ipswich Town. But I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy New Year from the players and staff at White Hart Lane.
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
