Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
Events have moved apace at Spurs during the course of the past few weeks. When I joined the club it was clear that there was a huge amount of work needed in order to ensure the consistent success that this club should achieve on a year-by-year basis.
The departure of George Graham has enabled the club to make changes, not only in bringing in Glenn Hoddle as our new manager but also in thinking about the overall philosophy as to how the club is run and the basis on which it needs to be run to succeed.
During the course of the next few months I will be looking at five main areas in relationship to the club’s activities. Namely:
1. Internal and external communication.
2. The financial affairs and funding of the club.
3. Sales, marketing and branding.
4. Operating and property issues.
5. All aspects of the footballing activities of the club.
Undoubtedly, these will result in the promotion of new ideas, new thinking and a new and improved way of working towards a successful future for the club. It won’t mean that we will get everything right first time. However, we will try to be innovative; we will embrace new ideas and new thought processes. If we do not succeed at first we will learn by our mistakes and try not to repeat them.
The question of communication with all of those who support our club, whether it is through season tickets, hospitality, general support or employment, is of paramount importance to us and hopefully all will notice a positive change in communication which will emanate from this club, now and in the months and years ahead.
We also want and need to be successful on the football field and I believe the appointment of Glenn Hoddle will go a long way towards redressing the imbalance the club has suffered in terms of success over the previous decade.
We will need to be innovative in how we raise funds and use those funds to invest in all of the club’s activities, including adding to the playing squad. There is money available but we need to spend this money wisely and recognise that our North London rivals, who have spent nearly half of the money that this club has spent over the last five years, have managed to develop a squad and a team, that was undoubtedly superior to our side when we lost in the semi final of the FA Cup, Sunday a week ago.
The match showed the gulf that exists between our club and some of the top clubs and it is a gulf that we need to bridge and bridge as quickly as we can. We also need to grow our squad from the bottom upwards and consider the Academy and the youth and reserve teams because this is where the future of our club lies.
There has to be a balance between what we invest for the future and what we invest for the present and we will be working with Glenn to ensure that we achieve this balance.
A lot of the future will have to be carefully planned and carefully structured so as not to waste any of the valuable assets that we have. We need to spend wisely. We need to attract players to this club wisely. And we need to be more upbeat in how we operate throughout this club, particularly on the football side.
When fans chant ‘We want our Tottenham back,’ believe me I know what that means. I will play my part in ensuring that we all have our Tottenham back and that we remember the heart, soul and the traditions that this club embraces and has embraced for many decades past.
However, we are not going to live in the past. Yet we must never forget our heritage as our history as a great club is of paramount importance to all who truly support the club and have done so for many years.
This era closes and a new dawn beckons. Long may the new beginning continue in the successful vein we all seek and let the true Spurs go marching on.
