Pritch's play-off dream becomes reality

05 May 2015|Tottenham Hotspur

Alex Pritchard had the weekend he was dreaming of.

The livewire midfielder on loan at Brentford spoke to us ahead of a nerve-wrenching final weekend of the Championship where the Bees were relying on results to go their way to finish in the play-offs.

It all perfectly fell into place.

‘Pritch’ opened the scoring as Brentford beat Wigan 3-0 at Griffin Park and with rivals Derby and Ipswich both losing their final matches, the Bees leapfrogged from seventh into fifth at the end of the 46-match campaign.

The Premier League fairytale is still on and Brentford now take on Middlesbrough over two legs for a place in the Championship play-off final at Wembley - and Alex is preparing to go head-to-head with Spurs team-mate and friend Ryan Fredericks, currently on loan at Boro.

On top of everything going right on the pitch, Alex was also named the club’s Players’ Player of the Season and all this on his 22nd birthday!

“It’s crazy,” Pritch told us on Monday. “As I said last week, we had to concentrate on what we had to do and then needed help.

“As the game was going on I was asking people the scores from the other games, especially when we went 1-0 up and then to find out that both Ipswich and Derby were losing at half-time, you just got a feeling it could be our day.

“We went to 3-0, the crowd were all cheering and you knew it was going our way. Reading were winning 3-0 at Derby, Blackburn were beating Ipswich and we were 3-0 up, so it was perfect.

“And the day before my birthday as well! To finish fifth was outstanding. Everyone now wants to get to Wembley and then get to the Premier League.”

Named in the PFA’s Championship Team of the Year last week, Alex has also been named Player of the Season by Brentford’s Norwegian Supporters Club and Match Magazine’s ‘FL Wonderkid’.

Brentford play host to Boro in the first leg of the play-offs this Friday (May 8) before the return at the Riverside on Friday week (May 15). Ipswich take on Norwich in the semi-final. The winners meet at Wembley for a place in the Premier League on Monday, May 25.
