Pride of a Young Lion

29 March 2016|Tottenham Hotspur

Harry Winks told us after signing a new deal earlier this month that he's taking his career step by step - and he took another stride in the right direction this week.

The young midfielder captained his country from the start of a game for the first time when he proudly led out England Under-20s against Canada at Doncaster on Sunday.

It ended in disappointment and a 2-1 defeat but Harry lost nothing in his own performance - indeed, it was highlighted for praise by Henry Winter, Chief Football Writer at The Times, in his column on Tuesday.

For Harry, it was a moment to treasure...

When did you find out you were captain?
"I found out before the game when we arrived at the stadium and I was obviously very honoured and delighted that I would be leading the team out."

How did it feel to pull on the England captain's armband?
Harry: "It was very special, something everyone aspires to and I'm grateful for the opportunity to do it."

How did it affect you in terms of your performance?
Harry: "I felt a responsibility to be a leader out there so from start to finish I tried my best to keep talking and lead by example both on and off the ball."

It's another important step in your personal development...
Harry: "Yes, definitely. It was a new challenge, a great honour and to say I've captained England Under-20s is a special feeling. It's something I'm very proud of."

And that's caps at Under-17, 18, 19 and 20 levels...
Harry: "Yes, I'm proud of that as well! My next aim is to progress into the Under-21s."

You've had involvement in the first team squad all season, two more appearances, a new contract and now captained England - it's not been a bad season, what do you think?
Harry: "It's certainly been positive, a season to learn from for me. As I said before, I would have loved to have had more minutes but I realise I have to be patient and keep working hard every day. That's what I will continue to do."
