'Pride and emotion'

20 November 2015|Tottenham Hotspur

Mauricio Pochettino reflects on the events of last week – events at both ends of the emotional scale, the terrorist attacks in Paris, where Hugo Lloris captained France against Germany and Dele Alli and Eric Dier making their full England debuts on a poignant night against the French at Wembley on Tuesday.

“There has been a lot of emotion,” said Mauricio, who played in France for Paris Saint-Germain and Bordeaux between 2001-2004.

“We are all shocked with what happened in Paris and at the same time, we’re all proud and happy for the players like Dele and Eric who made their first start for the national team.

“Hugo is okay. Emotionally it’s difficult (for him) because it’s impossible to forget. The important thing is for us to back him, try to help him and try to help all the players.

“It’s difficult for Hugo and for the Belgian players but in the end, we share the pain and we need to look forward and try to do our jobs. That is the best way to pay tribute.”

Dele struck a stunning goal on his full debut and then helped set-up Wayne Rooney for the second in England’s 2-0 win. Dele, Eric and Harry Kane all started and all appeared in Friday’s friendly in Spain alongside Kyle Walker. Ryan Mason was also in the squad.

“It means a lot for Dele, means a lot for Tottenham, and for all our supporters,” added Mauricio, capped 20 times by Argentina. “Today, Tottenham is the focus in England and not only England, in Europe.

“For this, we feel very proud and we congratulate them not just on the performance, but on the behaviour with the national team, that was amazing.

“We all feel proud but the success is first of all for the players. The players deserve it because it’s up to them to go and develop their jobs. We just give them the tools to improve.

“We all work hard, we all work hard together and we feel very proud and very happy at Tottenham.”
