POSITIVES FOR MARTIN

Martin Jol had plenty of positives to dwell on after we opened our friendly campaign with a win at Stevenage Borough - not least a debut goal for Darren Bent.

Our summer capture from Charlton sped onto Steed Malbranque's pass before calmy slotting past the advancing Ross Ketteridge for his first goal in our colours just a minute into the second half.

Darren was also involved in our opening goal in the first half as he exchanged passes with Robbie Keane before being bundled over by Ronnie Henry. The referee pointed to the spot and skipper for the afternoon Robbie slotted home with ease.

Ollie Allen - son of our development coach Clive - showed a touch of his father's class in front of goal to level matters after 43 minutes but Darren's goal paved the way for a one-sided second half where home keeper Ketteridge made a number of fine saves before allowing Adel Taarabt's 25-yarder to slip through his fingers for our third goal.

"We had a number of players not involved and had a lot of younger players in the squad who all got on, so that was positive for us," said Martin.

"We started with an attacking formation and we could have scored a more in the first half.

"We went out with the same formation in the second half, we wanted to win the game and we played much better.

"We were able to play some younger players and show our fans the likes of Jamie O'Hara, Jacques Maghoma, Jake Livermore and Chris Riley, so that was positive.

"Darren Bent also scored his first goal, we won the game and we came away with no injuries, so that was all positive for us as well. It was our first friendly, the sun was out and overall, it went well."
