Positives for Andre
Andre Villas-Boas was delighted with the team’s performance in Saturday’s 0-0 draw against Liverpool in Baltimore - insisting that he’d seen improvements from Tuesday’s display against LA Galaxy.
We had the better of the chances under the scorching afternoon sun at the M&T Bank Stadium, home of the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens.
Andre was particularly pleased with our performance defensively as Liverpool were restricted to efforts from distance and rarely cut us open.
At the other end, Aaron Lennon struck the post, Harry Kane shot just wide and Gylfi Sigurdsson forced the save of the day from Brad Jones.
“It was a great, great effort,” said Andre. “In these conditions, it’s almost impossible to play.
“I’m extremely pleased, especially when you consider that Liverpool are a week ahead of us in their preparations and physically, that means a lot.
“It was good to see we managed to stay on their level fitness-wise and create good opportunities as well.
“Defensively we were very solid, compact and we pressed Liverpool high up the pitch.
“From the first minute we managed to press them, create problems, recover balls, stay defensively compact and that signifies an improvement from what we did against LA Galaxy.
“This is the commitment that you want.
“In the end, every team that goes through pre-season is trying to build for the first game (of the Premier League), physically and in a certain style of play.
“We achieved good things today and that’s why I’m very pleased.”
