Posh nice for Davies

English Barclays Premiership

Simon Davies may not miss out on his dream pre-season date after all. The midfielder feared he would struggle to make the friendly against his former club Peterborough United at London Road on August 8 after being told that his healing broken hand would be another three weeks before being ready for physical contact.

Davies made his name at Posh before we prised him and team-mate Matthew Etherington away in a combined L1.2m deal in January. Naturally, he was devastated at the thought of missing that Posh date but Davies made a surprise return to action for the reserves at Aylesbury and has followed up against Chesham United on Saturday and Sittingbourne on Tuesday.

The Welsh star revealed: "To be honest I didn't really know much about returning against Aylesbury but at lunchtime on that day I was told I was playing. I'd been doing a lot of contact work in training and was told to ease my way into it and that's basically how it came about.

"I played in a practice match the Saturday before and took it easy and it was the same against Aylesbury, trying not to have too much contact and trying to get into the pace of the game.

"I took a few knocks and it stood up to it so I feel pretty good now. It was ideal to play a match like that, not looking to go into anything stupid and taking care.

"Hopefully I'll be okay to face Peterborough now. I'm still taking it carefully, step by step and getting into the games a bit more each time and I'm definitely looking forward to it."
