Q & A feature from the Middlesbrough programme featuring new boy Wayne Routledge...
Q. Have you always played in the position you play in now?
A. I actually started out playing up front when I was about 10, but when I was about 13 I was moved out to the right wing and I’ve played in that position ever since, it’s where I prefer playing most. I enjoyed being a striker, and having pace is always an advantage but I found I had more freedom when I played wide right.
Q. If you weren’t a footballer, what would you be?
A. I would probably be involved in some sort of computer or IT work, for a company or on my own. It’s something I’ve always been interested in ever since I was a kid and my dad is involved in that line of work too. I’ve always been around computers and I’m comfortable using them, so that’s probably what I’d be doing.
Q. What has been the highlight of your career so far?
A. I’d have to say winning promotion with Palace in front of 80,000 fans at the Millennium Stadium, I really enjoyed that day. It was a fantastic occasion, but just the fact that it meant we were promoted to the Premier League where everyone wants to play made it special. I’m still young though and I hope there are many more highlights to come.
Q. Could you go on Big Brother?
A. Funnily enough I was talking about this the other day. I think it would be very difficult to go in there with a bunch of people you don’t have a clue about, and then there’s the cameras, you’d have no privacy. But, if I really had to, I think I could do it.
Q. Do you look forward to coming into work every day?
A. Yes, definitely. I love playing football, it’s what I’ve always wanted to do and especially with the players we have here, of course it’s great coming to work to train alongside them. For anyone who loves football, coming to work to do the one thing you enjoy the most obviously isn’t a problem and I’m sure there are lots of people out there who would like to do our job too.
Q. At what point did you know you were going to be a professional footballer?
A. I don’t think I ever knew for sure, but what I did know was all I wanted to do was play football. I love the game and from the first moment I started playing, I knew I wanted to be a professional. I was lucky enough to play first at Palace and now here at Tottenham and I know how fortunate I am. I was playing for the first team at Palace even before I’d signed professional forms, so even then I couldn’t guarantee I would be a ‘professional’ !
Q. What was the first car you owned after passing your driving test?
A. I passed when I was 18 and had a bit of money saved up, so I treated myself to a black Mercedes coupe. I was playing first-team football at the time, so I thought I deserved a treat !
Q. If you weren’t a footballer, which other sport would you want to play at the top level?
A. I’ve never wanted to play any other sport. I follow other sports such as basketball and my dad plays rugby, but I’ve never got involved in that, I never fancied getting smacked out on the wing ! My true love has always been football.
