Lee Barnard admitted the reserves knew exactly what to expect when Coventry City were reduced to 10 men on Wednesday night.
City defender Tim Partridge was red carded after a bust up with Spase Dilevski midway through the first half.
It was the same case last time out for the reserves when Rodrigo Defendi was sent off just a few minutes into the second half after giving away a penalty against Charlton.
Already 1-0 up via Lee's opener, we capitalised against Coventry with three goals in six minutes from Lee again, Eddie Silva Sousa and Mark Yeates to lead 4-0 at half-time.
However, it was a different story in the second half with the home side re-organised and the game very much a stalemate before Lee bagged his hat-trick goal two minutes from time.
"Last week it happened to us with Rodrigo sent off," said Barney. "We know exactly how difficult it is to play against 11 men so we passed the ball around and when the chances came, we took them.
"But it was harder in the second half. They did well, perhaps we should have done more but we still won 5-0."
Lee couldn't hide his delight with his first hat-trick for the reserves. "Obviously I'm very pleased and I'm delighted to score a few more goals," he added. "Things are going well for me at the moment."
