I THOUGHT we did alright against Middlesbrough. We knew it was going to be a tough game and they pipped us to that last European spot last season. It was a decent performance and we got the result. I made two decent saves from free-kicks in the second half and I was pleased with both. The second one from Hasselbaink I saw very late, it came through the wall and it was suddenly low down by my left side so I had to get down quickly and dig it out.
THE THREE clean sheets have been the most pleasing aspect to the start of the season as far as I’m concerned. We’ve played well for a while now defensively as a team and every time we walk out to play, our goal is to keep a clean sheet. We done that in every game so far and as I said after Blackburn, it would be great to continue that against Chelsea this weekend.
WE WEREN’T too pleased with how we played at Blackburn on Wednesday night. It wasn’t the best performance and perhaps Blackburn could feel a little hard done by not to have got anything more out of the game. We didn’t really threaten until they went down to 10 men but you look at it and we haven’t played the best, been below par and still come away from Ewood Park with a point and clean sheet.
ONE OF Blackburn’s chances in Wednesday night’s game was a 50-50 between myself and Shefki Kuqi in the first half. My knee is at the stage now where I’m 100 per cent confident that I could take another whack and to be honest, in a situation like that, it doesn’t even enter your head. I came out, he got the ball just in front of me and I ended up getting smashed in the face but I got there in time to do enough. That’s what I’m there for.
CHELSEA on Saturday is a top of the table clash and these are great games to play in. You have to have a lot of respect for Chelsea with all the success they had last season. But we have to be confident and positive from the start, try to break them down and keep it tight at the back. We know we are capable — we have to go out and prove it.
JOHN TERRY and Frank Lampard showed what they are all about last season and were probably the most consistent players in all of Chelsea’s success. They are the spine of Chelsea and England at the moment. Obviously, I play behind JT at the moment with England. He’s a good lad and as a defender, he’s got everything. He’s great to have around the place, a leader and great in the dressing room. On the pitch he’s so solid in the air and tackle but he’s comfortable on the ball as well.
