+Chelsea Programme: Martin Jol

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Welcome back to the Lane and to everybody from Chelsea.

It was a shame that we could not maintain our 100 per cent record at Blackburn on Wednesday but we have to be happy with a point because we failed to play as we can on the night.

We did well in defence and in midfield but our problem was that we could not get the ball to our forwards often enough. However, we came away with another clean sheet and that’s a big positive so although I was not too happy afterwards, I still have to be satisfied with seven points from our first three games.

It was also good to have Michael Brown back who played as if he hadn’t been away. With Edgar Davids and Michael Carrick suffering slight knocks from the Middlesbrough game, his return was timely alongside Pedro Mendes who deserved his chance after a great pre-season.

In contrast, we had played some good football against Middlesbrough in our last match here, which was not easy because, although we were playing with a lot of confidence, we also had to made adjustments to our formation.

We had already lost Ledley King, Robbie Keane and Davids for our win at Portsmouth and although Edgar’s return for his league debut gave us a boost we still had to adapt.

We were also without the injured Wayne Routledge who gives us width and that is exactly what I had in mind when we brought him here. When you have one player flying on the wing it gives you so many more attacking options.

True we had done well at Portsmouth but we knew that Boro are one of the best organised teams around and defend very well. That is due to a large extent to Gareth Southgate who is giving them a fantastic defensive shape.

In Wayne’s absence we looked to Paul Stalteri to excel on the right and he did that because we need an overlapping full-back with a good cross. Don’t forget that he didn’t play a game in pre-season so all credit to him for his excellent start against Porto which he has continued in the Premiership.

Stephen Kelly has done well and is one of the young players for the future, a real Tottenham player, as is Reto Ziegler but they are still learning their trade and will be even better in time.

And then we have Jermain Defoe. Sometimes in games you need something special because if you can’t open up a defence the ability to produce things out of nothing can make all the difference. And Jermain is someone who can do that - and he did it against Boro.

Jermain was substitute at Blackburn because he’s played a lot of games lately and Robbie also possesses that goal-snatching knack and has been flying in our build-up games. Even with Fredi Kanoute leaving — and we all wish him well at Sevilla — we are well served in attack.

That is why we should win games if we don’t concede. Because we always have the ability to score goals.

And that is exactly what the Premier League is all about. Chelsea could easily have lost at Wigan and could have drawn with Arsenal. So they would have had one point instead of six after their first two games.

But what happens ? They score in the 93rd minute against Wigan, who had played so well against them, and they scored a scruffy winner against Arsenal. You can have six points, one point or zero. It’s that close at this level.

However, Chelsea certainly hit top form on Wednesday night with their 4-0 win over West Brom.

If you look at the four big aspects of football — the need to be tactically strong, technically strong, physically and mentally strong — then Chelsea represent the best example. They consistently demonstrated all the four aspects 100 per cent last season.

Now it’s our turn to test ourselves against Chelsea and Jose Mourinho who is one of the best managers in this country.

In closing, I am delighted to have signed a new three-year contract at Spurs. I have always been fully committed to this great club and love it here. Optimism is high because the potential is so encouraging and although there is still a lot of hard work to be done, it’s just wonderful to be part of it.

I echo that maxim from Bill Nicholson that we are here to entertain the supporters because I share that belief and also want to give you all the success you crave. Thank you for your support.
