Michael Carrick passed credit to West Brom for their approach to Wednesday night's encounter at the Lane, but admitted there was disappointment in the dressing room over the outcome from our point of view.
The Baggies set their stall out from the off, making it difficult for our midfield to play their way through to the strike partnership of Robbie Keane and Jermain Defoe. The assignment was made all the more tricky when Zoltan Gera shot the visitors into the lead on 24 minutes and it took a change of system after the break to enable Keane to level.
The boys pressed for a winner, but the resolve of Bryan Robson's side saw them through to claim a point.
"It was disappointing and we had a good chance to do something with the way the results have gone for us, to close the gap on the ones ahead of us and extend it on the teams behind," reflected the midfielder.
"It is the way it goes and it wasn't to be.
"A lot of credit has got to go to West Brom, they defended really well and made it really hard for us. Especially when you go behind and they had something to sit on.
"We had to try and be a bit patient, we are not going to resort to just lumping the ball forward - we try to play our football. They closed the space down and didn't let us get to the front man which made it difficult for us."
Michael added that the scoring of the first goal does so much to determine the nature of home games against teams in the lower reaches of the table.
"I don't think there is much in it, teams come and defend and if you give them something to go on like we did against West Brom they get a bit more energy. If we get the first goal it can be a different type of game."
