Pleat's balancing act
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
David Pleat feels the signing of Jermain Defoe offers the club a nice balance of forward players.
The recruit from West Ham will compete with Robbie Keane, Helder Postiga and Fredi Kanoute for striking positions and David admits the chance to sign such a special talent was an opportunity not to be missed.
"Very special for his age," considered the acting boss. "It is an opportunity for us to add to our stock of potential scorers and I think it gives us a nice balance with what we have at the club. Helder with his terrific potential, Robbie who is already proven at the top level and Fredi who has displayed his great ability to score and stretch defences.
"It is a nice balance of front players and, of course, it is a case of getting the right combination and the right system to suit."
David agreed that the move for Jermain fits in with policy of trying to bring in young domestic potential into the club, as he has demonstrated before with the signings of Simon Davies, Anthony Gardner, Gary Doherty and Matthew Etherington - although he admits this signing was a bit more costly.
"Usually it is someone within a lower price bracket, but I am delighted to invest in this way," he added. "The chairman has worked tremendously hard with all the negotiations and I think we have come out well.
"Hopefully Bobby Zamora will do well with West Ham too and he goes with all our best wishes.
"If you are looking for a quality British striker there is no-one with a better pedigree than Jermain at his age. Now we have to find the right balance, I think there are a couple of other areas in the team that we have to look all the time towards improving, but this is in keeping with our philosophy of trying to get good British young players.
"I think we've already succeeded to a certain extent, but the proof of that will be in the eating. Can we do well over the next few years with the likes of Gardner, Doherty, Davies and King - the younger element of the team that will come to the fore, gain experience and hopefully learn very quickly."
