Pleat slams Carr rumours

English Barclays Premiership

David Pleat has dismissed suggestions in a Sunday newspaper that contract talks with Stephen Carr have broken down.

The Sunday People claimed that our latest offer to the Irish international full-back was below his expectations and that Manchester United were closely monitoring the situation.

Director of football Pleat revealed earlier in the season that we were looking to improve Carr’s contract.

Pleat declared: “This story is inaccurate. In fact, Stephen’s agent Robert Segal has telephoned me to apologise and to claim that he doesn’t know the source of the story and that there is no substance to it.

“We are talking to Stephen’s agent about a new contract and at this moment nothing has been refused or agreed. We have only just started discussions as Stephen has several seasons to run on his existing contract.”

Carr is quickly gaining the reputation as the best right-back in the Premiership.

Our current Player of the Year, the 24-year-old — at Spurs since he was 16 — is now seen as first-choice for Ireland and is expected to add to his 13 caps in the World Cup qualifying match against Portugal at the weekend.
