Pleat refutes Marseille claim

English Barclays Premiership

Director of football David Pleat has poured cold water on newspaper claims that David Ginola is Marseille-bound, having turned down a switch to Aston Villa.

Pleat had earlier insisted that Villa were the only club to express an official interest in the Frenchman, and it seems the situation hasn't altered.

"This is not true," said Pleat. "We haven't spoken to anyone directly at Marseille. Our position hasn't changed."

Most of Wednesday morning's tabloids carried the story of Ginola returning to his homeland, the Mirror quoting Marseille president Robert Louis Dreyfus as saying: "There's been an approach. We want to sign quality players and he fits into that category."

The same report claims that Marseille have already made a written offer of L2.5m, an offer which would be unacceptable to Spurs.

"David Ginola will only leave this club if we receive a price of L3m for him. That decision was made in the summer and nothing has changed," insisted Pleat.
