Pleat on Sir Les

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

David Pleat will welcome back a 'role model' and 'gentleman' to Spurs on Sunday - the one and only Les Ferdinand.

One of the great modern-day strikers and third in the all-time Premiership scoring list, Les was unfortunately hit by injuries during his five-and-a-half years at the Lane.

He still managed 33 goals in 97 league starts between his arrival in August 1997 and departure to West Ham in January 2003.

Now 37, he switched to Leicester in the summer and is in fine form with 10 goals so far.

Acting boss David cannot speak highly of him. "I'm not saying he was untouchable in his prime but I remember him at QPR where he scored something like 80 goals in 160 games.

He had a fantastic record there. If you sat deep and they crossed balls, he would outjump defenders. If you tried to hold a tight line and push up the field, Les had the pace to get behind you.

"So whether you sat deep or pushed out, Les was absolutely on fire.

"Then Kevin Keegan's cavalier spirit and style of play at Newcastle served him well and he did fantastic there.

"He then came here and had more trouble with injuries than at any other time of his career. That often put him back so it was one step forward, two back.

"He'll be remembered as a smiler, a great role model, particularly for black players and an absolute gentleman. It's difficult really because you get accused of being a bit sycophantic but he's a lovely man."
