Pleat on return of the King

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

David Pleat has welcomed Ledley King's call-up to the England squad for Wednesday's friendly against Portugal.

The defender/midfielder was drafted in by coach Sven Goran Eriksson following Sol Campbell's withdrawal.

Ledley has been in fine form in his new midfield role of late with two goals in his last three games and acting boss David was happy to talk up the 23-year-old.

David said earlier today: "England do have problems with injuries, it always happens and we're always happy to help.

"I was reading a piece about Vieira the other day, a very good piece about when he was a young man. He could have played centre-half quite easily, as indeed Roy Keane can, but when you have massive energy, the ability to get to people, to anticipate, tackle and challenge and have some physical presence as well, then sometimes it's not necessarily a wasted position at the back, but that ability can be used more to the team's benefit.

"He's two-footed, he can come out of tight situations with the ball, passes economically and what we've said to Ledley is drive on, try to make things happen and he's come up with a couple of goals lately.

"For sure, I feel Ledley is more suitable for Tottenham as a midfield player but it won't deter his progress, he's a fine player and will be whatever position he plays."
