Pleat on away-day return

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

After a number of narrow defeats on the road, David Pleat reasons that the next stage in the team's development is to secure reward from such games on a regular basis.

Single goal defeats have been suffered this season at Birmingham, Blackburn, Middlesbrough and Southampton, while we came undone by a 2-1 scoreline at Fulham, the same at Arsenal and by a two-goal margin at Portsmouth.

The only - on paper - convincing defeats on our travels came at Chelsea (4-2), Newcastle (4-0) and Manchester United (3-0). Away wins came at Leicester, Leeds and Charlton, with draws at Liverpool and Manchester City.

In very few of these games have the team been on the rack and bossed for the majority of the match and they have enjoyed a good share of possession in most. A natural progression from this point is to begin harvesting points from such encounters.

"Absolutely and it is quite right," agreed David. "I don't like talking about patience but, the truth is, 1-0 is a narrow defeat. We have had a few of them away from home and the statistics say we haven't been quite good enough to get a draw, for whatever reason.

"The next stage is, if we sign the right player or players, is to start taking draws. Once we start getting draws we can start winning - it is a progression.

"Whether it is that drive to make things happen after we go a goal down or not, we must start with a quicker tempo in the game.

"Once you get the draw and wins it becomes a habit, a habit you want to keep."
