Pleat: No change on Sol

English Barclays Premiership

Our director of football David Pleat has rejected stories that we are set to sell Sol Campbell for a cut-price figure.

Both The Sun and The Mirror newspapers claim on Monday that we are ready to sell our skipper for L9m with Manchester United waiting in the wings.

The suggestion is that United are desperate to sign a centre-back with Jaap Stam struggling with an Achilles problem and the transfer deadline for the first phase of the European Champions' League around the corner on Thursday.

The reports suggest we would rather sell Campbell now than lose him for nothing on a Bosman-style free transfer.

However, Pleat responded on Monday morning: "These stories are just speculative and there has been no communication on this matter from Manchester United."

Pleat has insisted all along that the club want to keep Campbell, who is available to negotiate with other clubs on January 1.
