Different techniques for catching balls...

It's all about technique and different techniques for different balls, high balls, bit lower and balls along the floor.

Let's start with high one. You take it as early as you can. When a ball is rising and going up in the past, we said take it high, but now we say catch it early. In that gap, a striker can come in a get it. Attack the ball. We always say that there is one letter in the alphabet - W. Shape your hands in a W behind the ball and the ball cannot pass through there. Whatever the height, head, shoulder, try to catch it as a W.

When the ball is a lot lower, you can't catch with W, so you use your stomach muscles as a shock absorber and bring the ball in. When it comes with pace, use the stomach to take off the pace. In fact, the theory is the same when you catch a normal ball with the W technique in front of you, relax the arms and use the forearms as shock absorbers. If you don't the ball will pop out.

If the ball is very low, along the ground, then you scoop it with the knee behind. It's the same technique, two hands behind the ball, pick it up into the body. Alwaya make sure you keep you legs closed as a second barrier or put your knee behind the ball. I've seen young keepers not do that and if goes through the hands, it goes through the legs.
