In the latest in a series of features celebrating a decade of the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation, we meet Pete, a heavy smoker who was told by his GP that he was at risk of losing his leg unless he quit.
After numerous unsuccessful attempts, his life was changed when he was introduced to Ida, the Spurs Nurse, who delivers pop-up health checks throughout the community, including a stop smoking clinic at the Day Mer Centre in Tottenham.
During a 12-week course with Ida, Pete quit smoking and has since seen a dramatic improvement in his health and quality of life.
He said: “I tried to quit so many times before but nothing had worked, so what Ida has done for me is amazing. I can smell again, taste again and breathe properly. It’s like being given a second chance at life and I can’t tell you how grateful I am.”
