Perry's revenge mission

English Barclays Premiership

Chris Perry is seeking revenge, just seven days into the new season. The super-consistent defender was a member of the side blown away 6-1 by Newcastle United at St James' Park in the FA Cup third round replay in December last year.

That defeat hurt us badly, but we have now been handed an early opportunity to put matters right on the second Saturday of the Premiership season when we come face to face with Bobby Robson's men again.

After playing host to newcomers Ipswich Town at home on the opening day we face a tricky north-east double-header at Middlesbrough (August 22) and Newcastle (August 26).

But Perry declared: "We certainly owe Newcastle one after that 6-1 defeat. Obviously it was a night when everything went wrong for us, no-one played well and everything they touched seemed to go in.

"We've been handed the opportunity to put that behind us early next season. We've got a chance to put it right and I'm sure the lads will be right up for that one. We'll want to prove that we are a lot better than that result suggested."

Perry reckons if we can get off to a good start in that first week it could pave the way for a productive September. "The first game against Ipswich will be difficult," he warned. "They will be out to impress and we've probably been handed the worst time to play them. Middlesbrough and Newcastle are also tough and I'm sure we'll be happy to come away unbeaten.

"That could set us up nicely though because I think we could pick up a few points in September. A good start is always vital but we managed that last season and fell away. This time around it we'll have more strength in depth and hopefully we'll be able to cope with injuries and suspensions."
