Perry on pre-season jitters
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
Chris Perry admits that, as pre-season enters the business end, players do look for hints as to whether they feature in the manager's early season plans.
It is a particularly pertinent subject for our central defenders ahead of the coming campaign as Glenn is blessed with numerous options.
Dean Richards, Ledley King, Chris himself, Goran Bunjevcevic, Gary Doherty, Anthony Gardner, Ben Thatcher and Alton Thelwell are all conceivably challenging for two or three places in the centre of defence.
Chris explains that, in the early games, it is hard to judge the manager's thinking as all players are given games to accelerate their fitness. He feels that when the glamour friendlies kick in players get a clearer idea of the pecking order at that stage.
"I think in the first few games you're not looking for hints because everyone seems to play 45 minutes each and it's a case of getting your fitness," explained Chris.
"As you get nearer to the season, the games we've got against Feyenoord, Lazio and Celtic, I think the manager will be putting out, more or less, the team he wants to start the season with.
"Obviously you'll be looking to be in it, or seeing whether you've got a chance to be in it or not."
Chris agrees that the temptation is there to read too much into team selections for these games and that players do tend to fear the worst when their name is not on the starting list.
"I think you do. I'd love to be playing in those games, but I didn't play in those sort of big games last pre-season.
"I wasn't in the side at the start of last season, but luckily I got in and managed to keep myself in.
"Last season I was just looking for a chance to really show what I can do - and it will be the same this season I think.
"There is so much competition in the position I'm in that it is going to be difficult for any one player to get in and stay in.
"It's going to be a case of the manager having a lot of strength in depth there and he's going to be able to rotate the squad if he wants to if players are looking tired or whatever.
"I think you always have to prove yourself, you can't really rely on what you've done the season before. You've got to go out and show it again in training and in pre-season games."
