Perry: Ben's the best

English Barclays Premiership

Chris Perry has described our latest capture Ben Thatcher as 'the best left-back in the country' after his former Wimbledon team-mate arrived for the first day of pre-season training at Spurs Lodge.

The 24-year-old former England Under-21 international has followed the same path as centre-back Perry - who made a successful L4m move from Selhurst Park last summer - and goalkeeper Neil Sullivan, a Dons' team-mate last term.

Perry has no doubts as to the quality of our latest acquisition. "Ben is a great player," said Perry. "Obviously I played with him at Wimbledon for a few years and without a doubt, I would consider him the best left-back in the country.

"He is a wholehearted player. A lot of people think he is just a hard man on the pitch and likes tackling but he's a great defender and he's very good on the ball. He has one of the sweetest left feet I've ever seen. He has a lot more quality on the ball than people give him credit for and is one of the best defenders around.

"Ben's also a good lad and I'm sure he'll bring a lot to the dressing room. At times it can get a bit quiet but Ben's not like that and is a bit of a character. He'll bring a laugh and a joke to the dressing room, which is good. We need that."

Thatcher's arrival also adds strength in depth to the squad with Mauricio Taricco ready to fight for his current position as number one left-back.
