Pedro on Year Zero
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
With so many new players having arrived last summer, Pedro Mendes believes last season should be considered year zero where the foundations were laid for future success.
The midfielder enjoyed a pretty promising year zero himself before a broken toe put paid to the final few months of his debut season in English football. However, his watching brief put him a good position to assess the progress being made by the squad and Pedro sees only good things ahead for the young group.
"The team is in very good shape with very good players - young players," reasoned the recruit from Porto. "The Tottenham supporters must be happy because they have a team that can grow and fight for the title in a few years time, I am sure of that.
"This year, with so many new players coming in at the beginning, has been like year zero - next year will be number one. Zero year was when all the players met each other and started playing together. Next season will be number one, the players will have spent one year together and all the conditions will be right for a better season.
"It is difficult when so many players come in one season, it is possible to achieve something, but difficult because you play against teams who have been together a long time.
"After this year when things have gone so good, we have played well and got some terrific results, it will get even better. I hope it does."
Pedro was centre stage in the moment of season 2004-05 that is likely to be played over and over again and, in years to come, is a sure-fire entry in A Question of Sport's 'What Happened Next' round - if it still exists...
The goal that never was at Old Trafford will no doubt ensure Pedro's place in Premiership folklore but he insists he would swap all that just to have got the win.
"The 'almost goal!' It is funny, on that night and the day after we talked together and said we would need those two points at the end of the season.
"After all the talk I just wish it was a goal, forget the fame, just a wonderful win and three points would have been perfect."
