Pat's Palace delight
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
Pat Holland was delighted with the FA Youth Cup triumph over Crystal Palace on Thursday evening that now see's his side one step away from emulating last season's vintage.
A Michael Malcolm goal on ten minutes was enough for our under-18s to overcome Palace at Selhurst Park in a highly competitive affair. Luton Town or Middlesbrough now await in the last eight.
"It was a typical cup tie really," beamed Pat afterwards. "We started off well and I was really pleased with them, but we then stopped passing the ball as fluently as we had done.
"The goal was excellent, a terrific goal from a great ball in by young Yeates and a great finish by Michael.
"He hasn't been hitting the net recently so his confidence has been a bit low. I was really pleased for him.
"That was good, but then we just lost our discipline a little bit. I don't think it really affected us - it could have happened though at any time, it was one of those games. We didn't impose our passing on them after that."
Pat was quick to pay tribute to the defensive qualities of his team as Palace pushed forward after the break. All advances were bravely repelled by the central defensive trio of Danny Foster, Ricky Dobson and David Tyrie, flanked by wing-backs Philip Ifil and Marcel McKie.
"The three at the back were terrific. I couldn't alter it really, I looked at it and thought I couldn't disturb that. In fairness, Marcel McKie has been out a long time and came back and did well. Young Philip Ifil, a schoolboy, is certainly a talent. Paul Rutherford and David Tyrie gave everything and Danny Foster really played a captain's role."
The quarter-finals beckon and the chance to equal the achievement of last season's under-18s, who reached the semi-final stage before falling to a Wayne Rooney-inspired Everton.
"I thought of that in the dressing room. I was looking at them and thought we're only one away from the semis again.
"Full credit, because I thought last year's side was a physically stronger team and one or two have gone on and done well."
