Pat's 'humbling' return to the Lane

01 September 2015|Tottenham Hotspur

Pat Van den Hauwe made an emotional return to White Hart Lane on Saturday, but admitted he couldn’t choose which team he was throwing his support behind as his two former clubs locked horns!

The former defender won two league titles and the European Cup Winners’ Cup with Everton – our opponents at the weekend – before joining us in 1989 and lifting the FA Cup two years later.

Back at the Lane for the first time in several years to witness our 0-0 draw with the Toffees, the now 54-year-old said he felt “humbled” by the reception he received when he was introduced to the crowd at half-time.

“To see both clubs together playing against each other and being part of both clubs – it’s very humbling,” said Pat, who made 145 appearances for us in all competitions before joining Millwall in 1993.

“Knowing my allegiances to Everton Football Club and then going in front of all the Spurs supporters today that I still love dearly, it’s very difficult for me to pick and choose.

“I had four or five amazing years at Everton, then came to Spurs and had five amazing years under Terry Venables with some superb players. I enjoyed every moment.”
