Pat Holland was delighted that our young reserve side succeeded in imposing their football on a physically stronger Leicester City at Stevenage on Monday evening.
The Foxes gave run-outs to a number of players with Premiership experience including Frank Sinclair, Matt Elliott, Junior Lewis, Keith Gillespie, Lilian Nalis and Craig Hignett - adopting a rugged approach against our more diminutive attacking threat.
The Leicester powerplay secured an early lead from a set piece with a headed goal from Lewis before the boys settled into an effective patten of play and were rewarded with second half goals from Jamie Slabber - a third in three reserve games - and a spectacular winner from Rohan Ricketts.
"They had a lot of experience, were a tall side and we were a little bit concerned facing corners and free-kicks," commented Pat afterwards. "We chatted about that and, after a few minutes, they got one over the line from a corner!
"Their heads went down I thought for a little spell before they picked themselves up. In the last 20 minutes of the first half the boys showed signs of playing a bit more and getting round the back.
"At half time we told them to calm down and their luck would come. We then got the little break with Jamie and I please pleased with him because he looked a bit out of sorts in the first half and the goal picked him up. The second goal was terrific from Rohan - a great curler.
"It was a young group and Stephen Kelly and Goran Bunjevcevic really shored us up at the back and kept it nice and tight. We had a lot of boys who were prepared to do the simple things, work hard and win the little battles. At the end of the night I think we deserved it."
