Pat's boys stuck in the mud

U18 Academy South

Our under-19 side did not have the best of preparations for the FA Youth Cup clash with Portsmouth next week as they fell to a 2-0 defeat at Leicester on Saturday.

Coach Pat Holland fielded an under-18 side with the competition in mind but, after a bright start, a goal on the break and a defensive error proved to be the team's undoing.

Pat takes up the story...

"What we were looking to do was get the Youth Cup side together as it was the last opportunity. In fairness, Leicester played a similar side so both teams, in terms of age group, were evenly balanced.

"We started very well in the first 25 minutes and had a lot of possession without, what I would call, a real cutting edge.

"On the first real attack Leicester had, in terms of danger, they scored - which obviously set us back a little bit.

"We came out in the second half and did not too bad, but lacked an edge with Jamie Slabber not playing. I decided to change it with about 20 minutes to go and I put Paul O'Donoghue on.

"Unfortunately, straight away, there was a defensive error and we went 2-0 down.

"That, basically, was the end of the game. In terms of getting a result before the Youth Cup it was slightly disappointing. It would have been nice to prepare with a result behind us.

"Hopefully we'll have Slabber fit for the trip to Portsmouth which will be a big plus for the side."

Pat's boys must of known it was not to be their day when their coach got stuck in the mud for two hours after the game and they did not get home until 7pm.

"Unfortunately, the groundstaff, in their wisdom, directed the bus to a grassy area. Both sides, who travelled together to the games, were stuck in the mud at Leicester until 5pm.

"Fortunately, the 17s won 4-3 - so they got a bit out of the day."

Team: Rutherford, Ifil, McKie, Tyrie, Foster, Dobson, Barnett, Noto, Malcolm, Black, Yeates. Subs: Perry, Burch, Ford, O'Donoghue, Thomas.
