Pat on Rooney threat
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
Pat Holland is well aware of the potential threat posed by Everton starlet Wayne Rooney should he make his Premiership debut on Saturday - through bitter personal experience of the striker's talents.
Pat's under-18 side reached the semi-final of the FA Youth Cup last season and, although he had witnessed Rooney in action before, there was little he could do to prepare his defence for the performance the little livewire put on over the two legs.
Rooney, in tandem with his strike partner David Symes, tormented our rearguard at Goodison before scoring both goals in the return at the Lane. The secret was well and truly out, Everton have something special on their hands.
"I know what you're going to say," laughed Pat as soon as Everton was mentioned. "I still have a fantastic impression of the player from when we played at White Hart Lane.
"When he scored the second goal, it was a free-kick and he tried to shoot from 30 yards - he got the rebound and put in in from 25! It was a wonderful strike.
"He came to the line and he's got the build of a man so straight away he's got that as an asset. He's got great determination allied with skill.
"That determination, the look in his eyes, is something you try and give to players, but I'm not sure we can give that kind of desire and aggression.
"He's got that, the boy, and it's whether he can cope with the men. But, he'll definitely go for it, that's for sure. I'd like to see him play, it would be very interesting.
"I'm a great believer that if you're good enough it doesn't matter how old you are. I know you've got to be careful, but this boy is physically mature and has got the build of a man already.
"If the manager thinks he's good enough then good luck to him because it is great to see kids coming through the ranks, be it at Everton, Liverpool or Spurs, if they are good enough put them in."
