Pat on back for youths

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Pat Holland was delighted with how his side overcame an early bout of stage fright at the Lane to progress in style in the Times FA Youth Cup on Tuesday night.

After going behind twice, Spurs dispatched the Yorkshire terriers 4-2 in the under-18 competition with a second half performance to remember.

Jon Jonsson scored in the first half but the game turned on the hour when Lee Barnard struck twice in as many minutes to put Spurs ahead. Andrew Burke then capped the evening with a fine solo effort.

Boss Pat said: "I think they were a little nervous in the first half. I thought the full-backs could have pushed on a lot better but we had a little chat at half-time and it worked out perfectly.

"You’ve got to remember they are kids and this is a big stage for them. Obviously we’re not looking at playing in front of 30,000 but for them it’s a big stage — in their imaginations it is that 30,000.

"I’ve just reminded them of my first time on the main pitch at West Ham against Orient and I was so nervous. It’s a wonderful feeling to go out there on the park and hopefully one day one or two might go on and do it with the first team.

"It was nice to see people like Sol Campbell out there watching. It’s great for the kids and the club and it means a lot. All the under-19s were there, a lot of the young reserve players who have come through the ranks as well and it’s good to see them coming back to watch the kids. That was fantastic.

"People want to see success and want to see the youth side do well but I think it’s important to take some of the pressure off the kids, especially now in Academies where the pressure is so high. It’s about producing players but at the same time, it is nice to pick up results."
