Pat looks back
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
Pat Jennings reflected that, playing for the great Bill Nicholson, players had more than just a manager.
The double-winning boss was honoured by the club two weeks ago when he was the first inductee into the Tottenham Hotspur Hall of Fame and Pat looked back on his spell playing for Bill and explained that he was like a father figure to his players.
"Very very down to earth - you knew exactly where you stood with him," said perhaps our greatest goalkeeper. "We didn't even need a contract with Bill - just a handshake. He was as honest as the day is long and ran the club in those days from top to bottom.
"He was not only our manager in those days, myself and the great Cyril Knowles joined more or less in the same week and Bill was not only our boss, but like a father figure as well. We spent a lot of years together and he had a fantastic influence over my career."
Pat joined in 1964 and was a member of the teams that won the 1967 FA Cup, the League Cup in 1971 and 1973 and the UEFA Cup in 1974. He admits that attempting to emulate the exploits of Bill's 1961 double side proved difficult.
"That was our problem early on, that team enjoyed such success and we were the team trying to follow that. Unfortunately, some of the time it is was our biggest problem, trying to overcome them rather than believing in our team and forgetting what had gone on in the past.
"They had set the standards though and it was up to us to try and live up to them. When you look back at the team it was unbelievable and a team like that only comes along every forty or fifty years.
"Bill was always aiming to get back to the success of the 1960-61 team but, having said that, we had a lot of success too with the FA, League and UEFA Cup wins. We had a fair share of success and always finished fairly high up in the league as well. If we didn't finish in the top three or four and win something it was a bad season."
