OPTA PREVIEW: Manchester City v Tottenham Hotspur, FA Cup
After surviving tricky third round ties, four-time FA Cup winners Manchester City meet eight-time winners Tottenham Hotspur. City will be looking for revenge after Spurs knocked them out of the League Cup earlier this season.
As you would expect from a Kevin Keegan managed side, Manchester City matches this season have been full of goals. In City’s last nine games in all competitions they have scored in all of them and failed to keep a single clean sheet. The Blues have drawn their last five home games and Tottenham have not played out a score draw in the Premiership this season, so if previous results are anything to go by then this tie is unlikely to require a replay. Strangely though, City have only kept one clean sheet at home all season in domestic matches, which was against Tottenham back in September.
Manchester City have not won a home game this season after scoring the first goal. The Blues’ two victories at the City of Manchester stadium have come after falling behind to Aston Villa (4-1) and Bolton Wanderers (6-2).
Tottenham Hotspur’s recent resurgent form has seen them win four out of four. With Frederic Kanoute playing for Mali in the African Nations, Spurs’ other strikers have an opportunity to stake a claim for a place. Robbie Keane has responded by scoring in Tottenham’s last three Premiership games and should again lead the Spurs attack.
Winning the FA Cup is the most likely path to Europe for both clubs, although City did qualify through the fair play league last season. This term in the Premiership, only arch rivals Manchester United (244) have committed fewer fouls than City (264). Tottenham have had a vastly different approach this season and have committed more fouls than any other Premiership team (368). Spurs’ players have tended to pick up more yellow cards when losing this season. The average number of yellow cards rises from 1.2 when winning to 2.4 when the team does not win.
Manchester City have not won in their last four meetings at home to Tottenham and in the six FA Cup meetings between the two at City, there has never been a draw.
The most famous previous meeting in the FA cup was in the 1981 which is remembered for goals at both ends by Tommy Hutchison and a Ricky Villa wonder goal in the replay. The Citizens most significant FA cup win over Tottenham came in 1956 when City won 1-0 in the semi final, before going on to beat Birmingham City 3-1 in the final.
