Although many of Sunderland's first-team regulars were rested from midweek competitive action, it's highly likely that they were being rigorously put through their paces on the training ground.
Howard Wilkinson claimed that his side ran out of steam against Charlton last weekend and cited this as an area for improvement: "If we are not good enough then that's a problem; if we are not fit enough then we have got to do something about it", the former FA Technical Director stated.
Sunderland spent much of last Sunday's clash at The Valley chasing possession, which eventually wore them down. However, the fact they completed just 58% of their own passes did nothing to help their cause.
But after an astonishing comeback from two goals down at half time to Arsenal in the Worthington Cup - albeit against a weakened Gunners side - Sunderland fans will be feeling more optimistic for the visit from the other north London side Spurs this weekend.
The Londoners have won their last two visits to the Stadium of Light and have collected maximum points from the last five meetings in succession between the two sides.
Last time out in the Premiership Glenn Hoddle's team were persistent against Chelsea, launching 13 efforts at goal and testing Carlo Cudicini with half-a-dozen of them. However, overall, Tottenham's precision in front of goal has deteriorated of late and they have now tested the opposition goalkeeper with a lowly 36% of their efforts - seven percentage points below the Premiership average and noticeably lower than Sunderland's less than lethal rate.
Teddy Sheringham is experiencing a mini barren spell and has failed to net in his last six appearances. But the former England international scored what effectively proved to be the winning goal in the corresponding fixture last year and will be keen to repeat this feat.
Home hopes will be resting on either Marcus Stewart or Tore Andre Flo to provide the winning touch. The Norwegian hitman crashed home a stunning drive last week to double his Premiership tally since moving back south, while Stewart's quick-fire brace put paid to Arsenal in the week, but they will need to be at their predatory best to beat Kasey Keller. The Spurs number one has made the second-highest number of saves in the top flight this term and is chasing his fourth clean sheet of the season.
Neither side have won in recent weeks and may have to settle for a point this time around.
