OPTA PREVIEW: Spurs v Aston Villa
Two of the ever-present members of the Premier League meet at White Hart Lane on Sunday with both sides looking to reverse recent poor results.
Tottenham have failed to win in their last three games and will equal a club Premiership record of not scoring in three consecutive home games if they fail to find the net. This game will be the seventh of David Pleat’s latest reign as Spurs’ caretaker manager, with his most notable success being the tightening up in defence. Having conceded 12 goals in their first six games under Hoddle, Pleat has seen his side concede just four goals in the same number of matches.
While Pleat and his staff have got the Spurs defence organised they have yet to have the same effect on the forwards and they have now failed to score in seven of their last nine home games. With only Frederic Kanoute scoring more than one Premiership goal this season, Pleat was be looking to his other strikers to shoulder their responsibility and in Helder Postiga and Bobby Zamora’s cases break their Premiership ducks.
Aston Villa shared similar problems in front of goal this season, having scored just two goals in their last six matches. Villa have failed to win in their last 13 Premiership away matches, which is a club record, although the Villans will point to the fact that they have hit the woodwork seven times this term — more than any other side.
With both teams struggling in front of goal there will be plenty of takers at the bookies for a goalless draw, especially given that this fixture has seen just one goal scored in the last three seasons. With Tottenham also having lost the last three home games officiated by this Sunday’s referee Jeff Winter and Villa not winning any of the last five games in which he was officiating, it may take something special if anyone is to leave White Hart Lane with three points.
