OPTA PREVIEW: Tottenham v Chelsea
With three defeats in their last four Premiership games, Tottenham are desperate for a win to lift themselves back into the top half of the table. Unfortunately Saturday sees the visit to White Hart Lane of Chelsea — a side who Spurs have never beaten in the Premiership.
Tottenham have a worse record against Chelsea than against any other side in the current Premiership. There have been nine draws and 14 defeats for Spurs in the 23 Premiership meetings between these two sides, while Chelsea and Charlton are the only current top-flight teams that Spurs have never beaten at White Hart Lane.
Spurs record against their fellow London sides has been poor this season. They have managed to earn just three points from derby games this season, while Chelsea have managed to take 12 points from their all London encounters. Tottenham’s is the worst record for any London side in derby games this season while Chelsea’s is the second best behind Arsenal.
Chelsea will be looking to keep their outside hopes of the title alive and take advantage of the fact that Arsenal do not have a Premiership game this weekend. The Blues have already earned as many points this season as they earned in the whole of the previous campaign and Claudio Ranieri’s men have the fifth best points total of any side at this stage of the season in Premiership history.
The Blues have hit 57 goals this season — one fewer than Arsenal. They have created the third highest number of chances in the league this season with 376 and have the third best conversion rate of any side, with 15% of their shots ended up in the back of the net. Tottenham are unable to match that, having had 314 efforts with 12% resulting in goals.
Chelsea’s defence has been equally impressive this season. They have kept more clean sheets than any other side this term. They are conceding less than a goal-per-game on average and only Arsenal have conceded fewer. This is in stark contrast to Tottenham who have conceded the fifth highest number of goals in the Premiership this season. Tottenham have managed just the one clean sheet in their last ten league games at White Hart Lane, while they have only kept one in their last 16 Premiership encounters with Chelsea.
However, Chelsea have the second leg of their Champions League semi final at Highbury on Tuesday evening and perhaps with that in mind, they may not be fully prepared for the game at White Hart Lane. Spurs will of course be looking to take advantage.
