OPTA PREVIEW: Tottenham v Liverpool
Tottenham entertain Liverpool on Saturday hoping to extend their 100% winning record for 2004, which has seen them climb up to 13th place in the table, after entering the New Year in the bottom three.
In facing Liverpool they are up against another side which has hit a rich vein of form in 2004 after having struggled in some of the earlier stages of the season. Like Tottenham, Liverpool have won both their league games of 2004 and progressed in the FA Cup and Gerard Houllier’s men have yet to conceded a goal this year.
White Hart Lane has not proved to be too happier a hunting ground for the Merseysiders in the Premiership with Spurs winning on five previous occasions since the Premiership was formed. This is one of the best records of any club at home to Liverpool in the Premiership and only Chelsea have more home wins over the Reds.
Tottenham haven’t had it all their own way when they have faced Liverpool in the past though and the Anfield outfit certainly have a good goalscoring record against Spurs. In the 23 Premiership meetings between the sides, Liverpool have hit a total of 41 goals. Only Chelsea and Manchester United have put more past Spurs, while there are also only two sides that Liverpool have scored more against — Leeds and Southampton.
Tottenham’s recent record against Liverpool is not great however with just one win in the last six games against them, that came courtesy of a Gus Poyet goal at White Hart Lane in April 2002.
