Ledley King

Skipper Ledley King is Opta’s Tottenham Player of the Season for 2004/05 thanks to another superb campaign.

Under new Head Coach Martin Jol, White Hart Lane has experienced a renewed sense of optimism and in King, the north Londoners have a player capable of leading them back to former glories. The England stopper was the only Tottenham player to start all 38 Premiership games this season. Indeed King is one of only three outfield players in the top divison to play every minute of the season.

The 24-year-old was the main reason behind Spurs’ excellent defensive record. The Lilywhites conceded only 41 goals this season, a record bettered by only four other sides. Protecting Paul Robinson’s goal as though his life depended on it, King made seven last-ditch tackles, the joint-highest total in the top divison. The England international also blocked 40 opponents’ shots, the third-best tally in the Premiership.

Coming in second in the rankings is another young England player — Michael Carrick. The former West Ham starlet has blossomed under the guidance of Jol and now finds himself in contention for a starting place in Sven-Goran Eriksson’s England side on their upcoming tour of the USA.

Carrick was Spurs’ best passer this season, finding a team-mate with 1064 passes while the gifted midfielder also set up 35 goal-scoring chances, the most of any player at White Hart Lane.

Frederic Kanoute takes the third spot behind Carrick. The rangy attacker bagged seven goals this season and provided six goal assists, more than any other Spurs player.

The Mali international used his aerial prowess to fire in 16 headed efforts on goal and to get his head on 140 flick-ons, both highs for the Lilywhites. Kanoute was a constant thorn in the side of Premiership defences, winning 53 fouls, more than any other Tottenham player.

Fourth place goes to Robbie Keane who managed an impressive 11 goals this season. The former Inter striker had the best chance conversion rate of any of the Tottenham strikeforce, netting with 19% of his attempts on goal.

Keane’s fellow countryman Stephen Kelly takes the fifth spot after establishing himself in the right-back berth in the latter months of the campaign. The youngster bagged two goals for the north Londoners and looks set for a bright future at White Hart Lane.
