Opta Player of the Month — Michael Carrick
The Opta Tottenham player of the month for April is Michael Carrick who earns the accolade for the second time this season. The midfielder is starting to boss the Spurs engine room with rampant authority as they chase that final European spot.
Carrick sprayed 290 passes in April, the fifth highest total in the Premiership. Not only that, but his completion rate of 82% was better than any of the four players above him in that rankings. Carrick’s ability to sit in front of the defence and dictate the play has made him a crucial part of Martin Jol’s team already.
The one area of Carrick’s game that could be due some improvement is his attacking play. He did not manage a single shot in April, and was, therefore, in no danger of adding to his career total of five Premiership goals in 128 games.
Second place goes to rookie defender Stephen Kelly. The Irishman has worked his way into the Tottenham squad and April 2005 may well be remembered as the precise period when his career exploded into action.
Kelly scored not once but twice during the month, first away at Birmingham and then at home to Aston Villa.
Third best in April was Tottenham’s England international defender Ledley King. He was another of the goalscorers in the 5-1 cruise against Aston Villa but it his steady consistency at the heart of the defence that wins him so much admiration. Indeed, King is one of just four top-flight outfield players to have played every minute of every Premiership game this season. Not many would bet against him completing an entire season in May.
